I find your thoughts about Sam lying in this episode interesting, because I read those scenes a bit differently. In the car, when the town sign produces flashbacks for Sam, Sam looks confused to me, as if he doesn't quite know what just happened and so he just shrugs it off when Dean asks him. Later in the diner when the flashbacks happen again, Sam instantly admits to Dean that he thinks Samuel and him worked a case there, so I feel he is honest as soon as he realises what's happening to him. And Sam going out after he promised Dean not to was countered for me by Sam explicitly telling Dean later that he needs him to back him up, showing that he rather has Dean at his back than opposing him. So I felt that Sam's actions were in keeping with the overall affectionate and trusting relationship between the brothers in the episode. :)
I agree Sam looked confused on the first flashback, and I didn't find the intermediate lying blocking the trust in the end. Everything came clean within the episode, and Dean seemed more resigned than angered by Sam's lie about staying in the room. All's well that end's well, methinks ... and I LOVED the teamwork in Mannequin!!!
That was such a great analysis, thank you! I appreciate your personal anecdotes to back up your thoughts on Dean's fear of what might happen. I was in Greenwhich Village during 9/11 and was more like Sam rather than Dean in the days that followed.
I too was concerned during the episode when Sam hid his flashbacks and didn't stay in the house. I don't want the new partnership the brothers have to slip back into old patterns. I am hoping to see balanced trust this season!

Many thanks for your comment here and over at The Winchester Family Business; sorry responding took me so long!

Great review....again. I'm looking forward to your review on Mannequin 3 because I have already seen it prior to reading this review. But regarding this story, the main thing I have to add is that I don't think Dean and Sam will be like they were in season 1--too much has happened to them since then. The show, like reality, is what it is. I am certainly no critic in that sense. As for the small glitches in the show, my take on that is Dean and Sam are human, mistakes do get made. Maybe they aren't sleeping well... Speaking of sleeping, I wish (in vain) to see more of what the boys are doing when not on the job. I liked the ghostfacers show when it was more 'behind the scenes' and profanity was utilized. Some Asian movies (I have only heard, not seen) are ~ 20 hours long to convey a more realistic, continuous story instead of neat one hour shows or a two hour movie. I would sacrifice more time to watch, not be told, what the boys do outside of hunting--I am that interested in them. Thank god for fanfiction!!
It would be lovely to see an episode about the brothers being between cases, just dealing with living, laundry (really glad we saw that in The Monster At The End Of This Book!), boring newspapers and library research going nowhere, debating where to eat, and finally winding up sitting on the Impala's hood stargazing ... Sweet!
Dean and Sam will never be who they once were, but I'm confident they will be even stronger together in the future than they were in the past, precisely because of all they've gone through. And I will love to see that.
