I read a lot of True Crime - mostly because it is a horror story, just scarier because it is real. Anyway one of theories that some Religious leaders and even FBI agents in these books put forward about Sociopaths is that they don't have a soul. Also if I remember right the director of this episode commented that Jared was basing a lot of his performance on a well known serial killer that confessed on film - the BK Killer. So if the writers read any of the same stuff I do it could explain the direction they are taking in the story ( ... )

I'm definitely with you in loving this season! And I'm enjoying all the complexity inherent in the characters and situations; the spaghetti plots wrapped around themselves are intriguing me mightily. :)

Another brilliant analysis, professor! You have hit every single point (and then some) that this episode brought up. I must admit that I was just as surprised to see the writing team of Dabb & Loflin on this one without their standard brand of sophomoric, misplaced humor. I almost cringed when I saw them in the credits, but reminded myself that they recently presented us with the very enjoyable “Weekend at Bobby’s”. And they did SO well on this episode that I am going to completely overlook the time-continuum glitch. After all, it wasn’t as blatantly obvious as in the often-maligned season one entry “Bugs”, or as annoying as their own “Yellow Fever” of season four. Someone must be keeping a close eye on those two! LOL ( ... )

I agree with you on many things! :)

Like you, I have been enjoying the way they're finally expanding the Winchesters' world. I have some of the same problems with the depiction of the Campbell compound as I did with the Roadhouse; why they insist on always having anonymous, stereotypical hunters sitting around in relative squalor sharpening weapons is something I don't understand. The Roadhouse came off as a bizarre and unbelievable clubhouse because of that, and the thing I most dislike about the Campbell compound is that it seems to be going the same way. Hopefully that will change as the season progresses.

And I'm obviously one with you on hoping Sam gets his soul back sooner rather than later! *grin*

I read your recap more closely than usual because so much happened in this episode that I just couldn't take it all in. (I've only watched once, so far.) Especially the vamp attack - that was so fast and confusing!

I also agree with you that Crowley is bluffing when he says he brought Sam and Samuel back. I'm still thinking Raphael is involved somewhere. Wonder how long we'll have to wait til Sam gets his soul back? I'm really missing our Sammy right about now.

I couldn't write these things on a single viewing ... *grin* I can pick up a lot, but I focus so much on the brothers and their story the first time through that it takes at least another viewing or two before I can step back and look at details with a technical and dispassionate eye!

I'm sure Raphael is in the mix somewhere; the question is where, and doing what?

Isn't it Friday yet?

"I'm sure Raphael is in the mix somewhere; the question is where, and doing what? "

I'm curious about that, too. I didn't think much was settled in "The Third Man", except the destruction of Raphael's vessel (and darn, I liked that vessel). I think I'd cry foul if they didn't return there at some time.

I always enjoy reading your reviews and this review continues that trend. I am still trying to find a way to like this season even with the twists and turns. Don't get me wrong. I liked twists and turns but I still feel like something is missing this season that kept me glued to my television each week. Thanks for giving me more insight into what different things meant in this episode. I look forward to your next analysis.

Thanks; I'm glad you enjoy reading my take on things, and that it gives you something.

I know that for me, the thing that's been missing from the season is the relationship between the brothers that's always been the heart and soul of the show. I have every confidence we're going to get it back - I think Sera understands full well that it's the bond between Sam and Dean that made us all fall in love with the show! - but until we do, everything is going to be off-balance and uncomfortable, because we've leaned on that bond every bit as much as Sam and Dean have. Watching Dean lean and not be caught by the surety of Sam's love is disconcerting in the extreme ... I want Sammy back as much as Dean does!

Hey Professor,

How are you doing? It's been a while.

I adored this episode, and in particular I LOVED Dean and his reactions to everything in it.

He remembers who he was and that he was different. He’s at least marginally aware that something he used to have is missing, and something within him does want that to change even if only because he knows intellectually that without it, he’s incomplete...This is actually what I'm most interested in when it comes to souless!Sam, whether he starts making an effort to change and to try and be the man that he used to be. Like you said, Sam still has his memories and he's definately still capable of logic, so, IMO, he should be able to make moral choices based on his memories of how his former self used to react and extrapolate from there. Not that his former self was perfect when it came to making the right choice, but it's still a better compass than he has right now, and I'm very interested in whether this Sam will become much more reflective on his own behaviour and choices, just ( ... )

Good to see you, Immie!!!

It would be interesting if Crowley were working with a rogue angel, wouldn't it? Balthazar definitely gets around; I'm certain we'll see him again, although I wouldn't venture to predict the circumstances!

I'm glad you noticed and recognized the song! My blog-music choices are always significant. Many times they're obvious, particularly if the episode used a particular song; otherwise, they come directly from something the episode stirs in me and pulls out of my music collection. And watching Dean watching not-quite-Sam broke my heart: "And I miss you so ... when I look at you."

Hugs to you, my dear! I'm looking forward to connecting with you again in Vancouver ... :)
