At the same time, we saw from the very beginning that something crucial was missing; that Dean was still hollow at his core, gutted by Sam’s sacrifice and by his own fear that he didn’t deserve and would lose this family as he’d lost everything else. He knew happiness - we saw his genuine smiles with Lisa, Ben, and even Sid in his day-long montage - but what we saw in the very beginning, in his already being awake and sad even before the alarm ever went off, was a pensive melancholy redolent of his loss, of the vacancy in his heart where Sam always used to be.
I could quote the whole commentary back at you, for every bit that stood out, but this passage made me cry because it's so damn true.
What an insightful and moving recap....I disagreed with the Sam & Bobby not telling Dean that Sam was alive..but reading this helps. I dont think I'll ever really be ok with it...wonderful review cant wait to read your reviews along the way for this season :)
Thank you! Concealing Sam's return from Dean was the thing that most stuck in my craw - but understanding why Sam and Bobby might have done it seemed to help me accept that it happened, at least. :)
The passing car was definitely a contemporary Impala; check out the badge on the rear. I was amused!
Sam lost the two syringes he grabbed in the first second of his fight with the first djinn; the thing knocked them out of his hand, which was when he grabbed first for a lamp and then for the golf club. We never saw him pick them up again, alas ... those are the freaky details that jump out at me! :)
Great review, as always! Thanks so much for sharing your insights. You always give us so much to think about.
...but...ummm... actually, it's a Mazda 6 sports sedan... which one would only know by spending waaaay too long searching auto emblems on google after freeze-framing the scene trying desperately to see if that's really Sam driving right by Dean and Dean not noticing, because Sam, of course, is being stealthy-blacked-out-windows guy while tracking Dean to get to the djinn before they get to... oh, wait, THAT didn't happen, did it??
I had forgotten how much I love your meta and commentary. I learn so much from it, you really open my eyes to the many different levels of what's going on in each scene. I find myself feeling proud that I had a lot of the same thoughts about this episode as you. I'm so excited for this new season! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts, your reviews really enhance what I get out of the show.

We saw Sam grab a couple syringes of antidote right after Dean did, and we didn't see him use them or lose them.
