but I still think he’s as essential to the plan as Sam, if only to be Sam’s emotional anchor and incentive to do the job right.

I really do hope that isn't how it plays out because I consider being the yellow crayon speech giver (or being the yellow crayon oneself) one of the most insignificant, passive wet blanket non-role a TV character can have.

It's entirely dependent on what the other entity/person feels about you which is not something you can control or influence. To me, it's being an object. In a way he'd be like Sam's favourite ice-cream flavour or something.

That said, I fear the Finale just might play out this way.

I would want Dean to be the one to operate the rings and preferably be the only one who can do so. That would give him a unique, essential part. If Cas and/or Bobby got this part, I'd be feeling like the secondary or even cameo characters (Adam gets Michael) get the more significant and important parts.

Hope you don't mind if I give my thoughts on this:

"I consider being the yellow crayon speech giver...one of the most insignificant, passive wet blanket non-role a TV character can have."

From a human-to-human perspective, isn't being just a part of the source of what helps another person achieve greatness the most incredible job one can have done? I write this from the POV of a parent of adult children. And the same POV may not apply to TV characters. :)

I'm afraid I have the diametrically opposed view to this. :)

And it's the opposite of what I want for Dean's character. He has been called insignifant, dumb, whiny, weak so many times by humans, demons, angels and everything in between, even including his family, over the course of the show and I believe his big problem was/is that on some level he believed it, he believed that his sole importance in the world is derived from being Sam's brother.

It horrified and saddened me for the character but if it turned out this is his sole role, then to me what everybody said has been completely validated

Oh my yes, I agree with everything you say.

I can't rave enough about the introduction of Death, I still get goosebumps and tingles even thinking about it. The low male voices contrasted by the female voice, the words (I wish I knew the song, is it original?), the slow mo... Gah, *goosebumps*.... best character intro EVER.

I, like you, go into the final ep with my heart in my mouth and my box of tissues at the ready... I really do fear for them all, and that is inspite of knowing that there is another season.

Thank you! The song "Oh, Death" by the way, is an old traditional that's been around for a long time, but this arrangement by Jen Titus was specially commissioned by the CW. They spent money on Show! You can actually download that version from the CWTV website. I own another, longer version by R.I.S.E. (Rising Appalachia) from their "Evolutions in Sound: Live" album.

Nice analysis, esp. what you think Dean's role may be tonight.

Dying of anxiety!

Lovely review - I enjoyed it very much as always

One small oddity - which is why I am hoping Sam does not drink Demon Blood. Cas said that Sam would have to drink a lot of Demon Blood because it strengthens the vessel - but no other Angelic vessel has had to do so, nor would it make sense for Adam/Michael to do so. So why does Lucifer need it? Especially since Sam is supposedly his perfect vessel and because ultimately Lucifer plans to get rid of humans and demons - seems rather short sighted. That Cas believes it I accept but that does not mean that Cas gets things right all the time. Also since Sam is planning to be a short timer why would he need to drink the blood anyway? Nick yes but Sam? Perhaps it is because Sam is weakened by the blood spiritually and therefore would be less able to resist. So I am hoping he won't drink because I am starting to wonder if Cas is still really Cas - what if he is now Meg.

Extremely nice, clever and inspired as always. I share your apprehension. How will this finale be? Such an ominous feeling. Cannot wait. Listening to Kansas right now - in the mood.
