Another insightful analysis. You pointed out so many things that I missed in this episode even with watching it twice. I am so glad that you pointed out the similarities and differences to Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things. I knew that end scene reminded of a episode from season 2 but I couldn't remember which one.
Those first three minutes of the arrival in Rivers Pass are some of the best TV I think I've seen. Snowcapped mountains, Impala, broken bridge. And then Dean says "the hits just keep on coming" and up comes Spirit in the Sky to the sight of the boys walking down deserted main street America with shotguns in their hands. Magic.
And not to make light of anyone's pain with addiction, but I spent hiatus counting down to September 10, and now I find myself counting "only 20 more episodes to the end of Season 5". So yes, that's a form of addiction, and thank Kripke for DVDs and downloads.
Hello, I'm Mary, and I'm a Supernatural addict. I drink every episode more than once and can't give it up, so I think I'll just leave this twelve-step meeting now, thanks ... *grin*
I'm with you on the magic. I loved this episode, and what Phil Sgriccia did with the music and the shots? Thank you, God, for Phil Sgriccia, and for having him on this show!
Hey, Mary! Thanks for your thoughts on this wonderful, wonderful episode! For me, there are always things to enjoy in every episode, but this one broke me while leaving me with love for both boys and hope for the future.
Your summary of Sam's character journey was clear and well-explained, and I very much agree with everything. Sam had mentioned a few times he felt there was something "dark", "evil" inside him, but until now he always alluded to the taint of the demon blood - therefore to something of external origin. At the end of this episode, though, he recognizes his failures and weaknesses as human being, and it was a huge step for him. Is it weird to feel so much pride for a fictional character?
Thank you for your production notes, too. You bring things to my attention that I would never notice on my own. Like the bridge - I don't usually think about those things, but it's important to acknowledge the work of the production crew.
Now we'll have to see how well the boys do apart - it probably will be interesting. See you next
I'm every bit as proud of Sam as you are, Elsa - it takes a strong man to look at the darkness in himself and recognize himself in it. I love Sam and I love Dean, and I love what they mean to each other - and I love that they are growing up so much.
So many people never do.
I'm really looking forward to everything this season promises to bring, especially in terms of bringing the brothers back together again, stronger than ever.

Thank you VERY much, and you are most welcome here! I'm glad to have been of help in further addicting you to this show, because it deserves good viewers, and lots of them. And for all your praise, I blush ... know that it helped smiles on a less-than-perfect day in the life!
I have loved and enjoyed many shows, but rarely felt moved to this kind of depth of analysis. I can't watch everything as intensely as this, but that's good, because most other shows wouldn't hold up under this kind of scrutiny. I will always be grateful to Eric Kripke, Robert Singer, the writers, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and everyone else who has thrown themselves into making this the best show they possibly can.
I hope you keep enjoying the show as much as I do, and if you ever choose to delurk and chat again, rest assured I'll enjoy it tremendously. Thanks for coming, and for saying hi!
