Wednesday, 23 August 2006:  Elizabeth, NJ to Painted Post, NY

We pulled out about 7:50 for the 250-mile run to Corning, NY. We had another gorgeous day for a ride:  the temp was in the 70’s, the sun was high, and the scenery as we ran west from New Jersey into Pennsylvania and then north into New York was gorgeous. Isn't glass blowing interesting??
I went to a Carrousel museum in Mystic, Conn. I loved it.
Some folks don't think of Canada as a foreign country..
The locks on the St.Lawrence are fun, I did a housboat vacation on the St.L.

I really loved the glass show. Many years ago, I read a mystery novel involving a family in the glass trade, and was fascinated by all the research the author had done on glassblowing - I don't remember the book, but I certainly learned a fair bit about glass, and the museum really added to it.

I have a full-size carousel horse in my house. He's an original, not off a historic ride, and he's mounted on rockers: a grown-up size rocking horse! I always knew that if I ever went to San Francisco, there was a danger I would come back with a horse, because I knew of a couple of carvers still in the business. Sure enough, I wound up out there on business in 1993, and commissioned Dreamdancer. And now I can ride whenever I want!

I'm so jealous,I've lways wanted a carousel horse. Is he anchored to the floor and ceiling or is he on a platform?

He's freestanding on a platform, supported by two poles (one of which extends, in true carousel fashion, upward like a jumping pole). The platform, in turn, is bolted to rockers. He literally is a rocking horse! He weighs somewhere around 350-400 pounds, but he's so well balanced that even a young child can make him rock.

Okay - gotta make an icon out of a photo of him. I'll see what I can do, although I've got zippo graphic skills.
