Millau Viaduct

The Millau viaduct is part of the new E11 expressway connecting Paris and Barcelona and features the highest bridge piers ever constructed. The tallest is 240 meters high and the overall height will be an impressive 336 meters (1118 Feet), making this the highest bridge in the world.

I doubt I could drive on that knowing my fear of heights. Just imagining being that high up when an accident were to happen! :-(

...and as much as this bridge looks pretty impressive, I wonder how practical the idea was in its self. I mean... look at the surrounding landscape. They could have just as easily made a ground level road. Were they just reaching for the "Tallest Bridge in the World" title? Or was this bridge actually necessary?
