Wink up Sept 2010 - Ohno Satoshi

The people at Wink Up magazine sit down with the members of Arashi to talk about their new album and recent happenings.

What do you think the fans like about Arashi?

It’s just my imagination, but isn’t it about how they tend to want to protect us? (laughs) It’s like if they left us alone, we wouldn’t exist. Isn’t it because Arashi doesn’t have someone that tends to step out into the forefront or has great ambitions? If I didn’t have people to support me, I feel that I’d probably disappear. (laughs) I’d say, “Oh, I’m alone…”

Secondly, [I think] it’s how we get along so well. When people watch us it makes them feel good. What exactly do the fans like about us? I have no idea… You know, recently, I received a letter from a middle school student who said he was a big fan. I said to myself, “How did this happen?” I couldn’t help but wonder about it. I’m thirty! It probably was largely due to “Kaibutsu-kun”, I thought, “Well, I’m already an uncle!” But it makes me happy.

Tell us about “Boku no Miteiru Fuukei”.

This time round, the album has quite a few tunes which have a mature feel to it. However, when we were recording [the album], there was a nostalgic feel to it too. There were cool tunes which sounded like “RIGHT BACK TO YOU” from our older album. There are the nostalgic and the new. It’s rare that we have a Japanese title for the album too. I mean, was it really “The Scenery That We See”? It really should have been “The Scenery Seen By You and I (plural)”. “You” refers to the fans, and it should have meant that the scenery which we and the fans see is the same. “Let’s see the same things and walk towards it together…”, or something like that. I thought that was what it meant. (laughs) My solo? It has a mature feel to it. It’s a bit difficult to dance to, but I’ll try my best to dance to it during our live performances. Aiba-chan’s solo is good stuff. It fits him almost as much as how “Butterfly” is a fitting song for Kimura Kaera. (laughs)

Forgive this sudden question, but please tell us an interesting story which happened recently!

[Ponders over it] This is tough… To explain, I mean. Recently, I can’t control my laughter. (laughs as he’s remembering something) I met this person from Okinawa, and somehow he has a really distinctive face, in any case. His eyes were large and round, and he has really thick eyebrows. His complexion was extremely dark and he has a lively countenance. Somehow he just grows on you. (laughs) He’s called “Hiro-chan”, and when I say, “Hiro-chan, your face is really distinctive~” He replies, “I can’t help it!”

Secondly, when Hiro-chan takes a drink, he tries his best not to put the water bottle into his mouth. The look on his face when he does that is funny! (laughs) In any case Hiro-chan is just hilarious. (laughs)

Tell us about the tour.

It’s a tour about the album, so there are going to be new songs. However, we’re going to do our old tunes too. There’s a variety so I think it’s worth looking out for. I also look forward to the ardor we put into the [concert]. The next thing [we look forward to] would be the look on the audience members’ faces, I guess. Kokuritsu was really large, so I couldn’t see everyone… However, I will try my best to make sure my eyes meet with all the fans. The trick to make my eyes meet with yours? Wouldn’t that depend on your feelings? Send me your thoughts and say, “Look over here, over here!” If you did that, I definitely would feel it. I’m telling you that it’s true! I’ll be turning thirty during the tour? Oh, right, definitely. I’m thirty years old. I really want to turn thirty, so that makes me happy. It’s because I’m tired of being in my twenties (laughs), and I have no regrets. I don’t get tired at concerts yet, I think. I’m not past forty, it changes then. My dad told me so. He said, “Satoshi, you still got those moves!” (laughs)

Edited to add:
