A bit more babble on bad reviews

DON'T RESPOND TO BAD REVIEWS. Why not? Here's why not:

If it's a review by a private individual (blog, Goodreads, retailer site, etc):1. You don't know who they are. You have no idea how they'll respond. Odds are they'll ignore you, or tell you "Yeah, whatever, Author, this is my reaction so piss off." Or they might turn out to be slightly ( Read more... )

The one time I responded to a negative review on Goodreads, it was from someone who would have liked Child of Fire if it hadn't been so dark. He was tempted to pick up book 2, just to see if things lightened up a little.

I dropped a comment telling him book 2 was actually darker and he should probably save his money.

He thanked me. I got to feel virtuous and avoid another negative review.

LOL! Add another exception to the list: "If you're honestly telling them they won't like your other books."

When Anne Rice got quoted widely as defending some new vampire character, I figured that if she cared so much about the character, the book was probably worth reading.
