We had a workman like that when we fixed the house. It gave me great satisfaction to fire him.

Alas, the only satisfaction I have had is simply to not call him again to ask after the estimate. Clearly, he is not interested in the job.

Call the local electrician's union for a recommendation? Slightly pricier, but they'll be on time and they'll get you your estimates probably in the same day, and there's a degree of certification and insurance that comes with that's REALLY helpful, especially since you will absolutely need a permit and an inspection if you're rewiring the place.

I have many electricians in the queue. I would have been happy to go to the next one on the list if this asshole hadn't jerked me around.

That is, of course, why he jerked you around. Being honest and telling you he'd have a quote for you in a week would mean that you would have given the job to someone else by the time he finishes whatever he's currently working on.

He came out to the house and did all the poking around and stuff right quick. How much longer to sit down and write up a quote? I had an alternate guy out there yesterday and I got my quote around noon today, about 24 hours after he left.

Is there an online review site where you can relay your experience?

I'll poke around and see. The best I've managed is to call the person who referred him to me (my realtor) and tell him the story.

Utmost sympathies.

Maybe bitch to the BBB when you have a chance, in addition to having told the realtor the story?

And if you're a member of Angie's List in the area (which if you're not, might be helpful for you as a new homeowner to find recommendations for all the other things that homes require and is cheap), definitely bitch on their review site.

The BBB is pretty useless, but I've been thinking about joining Angie's list, so yes, that would be a good place to leave a review.

As Sperry says, "Grrrr." Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the next guy will be better.

I know this is no consolation whatsoever, but it just took over a week for our carpet setter to get back to us with a quote. I expect it from him, so I wasn't surprised and he's a stellar installer. All the subs here are slammed right now after a pretty slow summer. What I've never figured out is why some always seem to be eternal optimists at saying, "Yes, you'll have your quote tonight" when they really should say, "It'll take me 3 days."

This guy has now had 10 days. My official position is "I don't care if he ever gets back to me. I don't care if he offers to do it for free. He's undependable and that's that."

Yep. Pretty much sums it up. Still, "Grrr."
