1. Bail is what you do before a trial, to allow non-dangerous people to live outside of jail. The bail is held as collateral to pressure them to return to court for trial, rather than flee. Actually, we know from experience in our family. Even when the person is guilty, and darn well knows it, they don't accept their punishment calmly. Even when, thank goodness, it's not the chamber. I'll never forget my poor MIL's outrage at each fresh misery involved with the penal system. He was guilty as sin, but by God, how dare they punish her husband? It was quite comical. To be fair, though, neither of them has ever made a single remark about any other convicted person deserving their fate.
