There's a Rumsfeld quote that's actually appropriate here!
"There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know."
I'm curious how Rumsfeld was credited with this line. Do we have a where and when? My dad, who is almost the exact same age as D. Rumsfeld, has been saying this sort of thing to me since I was a small child.
