I really hate this time of year.

Imagine you have an older sister. She is in her early 40s, single, no kids. She earns a very good living and can pretty much buy what she wants or needs when she needs it (and since she earns more than you do, the things she might want that are out of her budget are also out of yours).

What would you get her for Christmas?

all wisdom is contained on lj, even i am stupid sometimes

That first is what I do for most of my family and friends who don't need more stuff. Donation to a charity that has some personal relevance to the person in question.

a puppy from the local shelter? she would be no longer alone and after the puppy chewed on all her shoes and slippers, you can always give her a pair for a present.

now, seriously, it's really not easy for some people. maybe a gift voucher for a store where she likes to buy clothes, books, whatever?

Something cool/useful that she doesn't know she needs.

In this weather, I'd look at things like polar fleece sleepwear and silk long underwear.

If you know her tastes, books or music or videos.

A gift certificate to some obscure but cool catalog that she may never have hard of. Bas Bleu springs to mind, an eclectic selection of books.
