Writer's lament of the day

Dec 05, 2010 10:58

AUGH, I HATE ENDINGS.

Really, I just suck at them. I tend to sort of peter off and just let the story stumble to a halt.

I really should do "rocks fall, everyone dies" sort of endings. At least then it's a definitive ending.

writing craft, writing, writer's block

I'm the same with my novels. I have an ending, but it's a struggle to make it important and dramatic enough without just blowing everything to bits in a massive explosion.

Exactly. I end it, but...

Fortunately, I think I figured out what to do with the bit that inspired this post. POV change!

I'm sorry. Actually, I think it would make the story in question interesting. Let's discuss.

Actually, that isn't the story I'm lamenting about. :-)

Do you read Something Positive?

I do not (though of course I just went and looked it up). Did they have one recently poking fun at endings?

The "Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies" bit was a comic for Something Positive about five? years ago (it could even have been as many as eight or nine, my memory of where it is in the archives is fuzzy). It may possibly be the origin of the phrase, but I don't know for certain.

I do know that "Every time you try to drag real physics into a discussion about a fantasy story, God kills a catgirl" is a meme another webcomic artist named Poe started, so it is indeed quite possible the Something Positive comic was the origin of the "rocks fall" phrase.

I cannot do endings -- I always seem to forget to write a last chapter and have to be made to do it.

I'm the opposite. I can't find the last chapter. I finish the book, and then keep fuddling around and adding more, and yet people will crit it as, "You need a capper to end this thirty pages earlier."
