Dear Google,

I applaud your recognition of the international community, and your desire to recognize that your service is used worldwide.

However, when I go looking at GoogleMaps of Russia, I need them to be labled in English. Shit, I would settle for them to be the local names transliterated to Roman alphabet. What I DO NOT WANT is for the ( Read more... )

And now you can sympathize how I felt when I was trying to look at maps of Japan before my holiday...

Well, yeah. I am going to Sweden next summer, probably by way of Copenhagen in Denmark, and my flight research for the trip was hampered by this.

Obviously, only people who actually live in a given country would want to look at maps of it.

Hm. Maybe I should complain at them that all the places in Ireland have not been labelled in Irish.

Oooh! You totally should! The Quebecquois got everything in French. Okay, maybe not all of Ireland, but at least the Gaeltacht regions, eh?

Irish is an official language of this country. We should get, at the very least, everything in Irish as well as English - same way it is on the signposts and such.

Well, I was just thinking in terms of putting you on equal footing with the Canadians...they could serve as a precedent, you see. You don't want Google coming back with, "India has six official languages, but we only use English on their part of the map."

(Yes, in my fantasy, Google actually cares enough to engage in debate with you.)

That's very strange. It might actually indicate something about how the program is designed. Oddly, I find that interesting.

I am sure there has to be some way to fix the problem, but I also could not find it on the map page. I'll continue to look.
