There’s been some argument over the interpretation of the essay I linked to over at malkatsheva’s journal the other day. I’m going to go through the "Invisible Moms" essay paragraph-by-paragraph (and occasionally line-by-line) to make clear what I’m reading there ( Read more... )

Your analysis tracks exactly with mine.

Y'know, you're right about the modern cathedrals. Now I come to think on it, we could also mention the Cathedral of Barcelona, designed by Gaudi in the early 20th century.

And you're right about the workmen. They may have been full of faith, but they were gettin' paid. Stonemasonry was and is a respected profession.

The other thing that struck me was right at the end there: "the sacrifices of invisible women and men." Where'd these invisible men come from? Old Charlotte just suddenly stuck them in to add heft, but up until then it was just invisible her.

I'm really eager to see if anyone will turn up an analogous [sic?] story in the masculine. Nobody has so far.

she kept on making herself miserable.

That is the bottom line IMO. She had a choice. Everyone does. Everyone. Some choose to suffer and I think that's stupid.

I choose to do what makes me happy and when I'm happy, my family is happy. Seems simple no?

SO, ya, I agree with you 100%.

My experiences jibe with yours. It IS really odd, isn't it? And you're so right about WNTW -- although I thought "How Do I Look" was even more cringe-worthy, with those confrontational parts where the teenage kids say, "Mom, you HAVE to update your look because we're ASHAMED of you!" And the mom tearfully agrees to do it, but only for her children -- not because she hasn't updated her look since 1982 ( ... )
