So... I have received a hospital appointment letter for a course of physiotherapy, the first session of which clashes with the Graduate Symposium where I am supposed to be presenting a poster

How desperate are you for the physio? How much would a delay until say September affect you? Given that physio may well not help that much beyond your current coping mechanisms, my instinct is to do the poster as that would be far harder to rearrange. FWIW I did a 5-session pain management course which had dire warnings that you had to come to all 5 and definitely not miss the first one. Two people did and just got given extra reading before the next one. So could still be an option.
