Look what happened in the middle of this threadHonestly, I could weep, but not for myself - I've had decades to get used to misogyny in geek venues. And that is precisely why I will never set foot near GameFAQs forums. Then again, I'd never consider posting on IGNs either for similar reasons. ;x

I think the "gender doesn't matter" idea comes from the same place as the "I'm colourblind and don't even NOTICE race" idea does. In that it actually does come from a place of wanting to be good, but it is in actuality a deeply flawed idea that does much more harm than good.

Yup, because one of the people who made a big point of saying "no one cares if you're a girl" also said "I believe in gender equality"!

Believing in equality is not a free pass for ignoring differences in culture or socialization!

If I wanted to be an asshole I could, of course, go round referring to every other poster on the board as "she" & seeing how much they liked it. But I'm really not that type of vindictive.

Yeah, unmoderated netforums tend to be a bit of a cesspit; even more so when it's gaming-related and all the 13-year-old boys (be they actually 13 or just mentally 13) feel the urge to dick-wave loudly and obnoxiously. Sorry you had to deal with that.
