Another fake internet death. Actually, this one was more of a fake internet coma, but they tend to end in fake internet deaths if the person's lies aren't caught in time

I feel very sorry for people that think they need to pull this kind of shit to get attention. It's just....incredibily lame, there are no words good enough to express my disgust and contempt for this kind of thing.
That's why I tell people about these fake internet illnesses. To warn them to be suspicious, and check all the details. Especially before spending time or sending gifts.
It just really upsets me that every time there's a faker like this, some real people end up being disbelieved. Someone else I know had a real nephew who was dying of cancer, and he died only a month or so after the fake dying baby. Well, it just took one shit-stirrer to post doubts about the nephew to cause someone who was looking for support to be faced with hostility - on top of the grief of her real-life tragedy. Not pleasant at all.
Don't ever stop caring for people or trusting people. That's what these internet fake sociopaths want. They don't have enough friends, so they want no one to have friends - assholes that they are. But also don't ever stop being sceptical and listening to your base instincts. Master manipulators play with your emotions then sneak in when your guard's down. If someone tries to flatter you, there's a reason for it.
Without knowing the details of this incident or the people involved, it's hard to comment, but there is one alternate explanation that comes to mind: could it be some kind of practical joke by a 3rd party aimed at X (the person who supposedly died) rather than at your friend? I'm thinking about the episode of Friends where Ross and Chandler start posting fake updates about each other to their university alumni website: Ross posts a report saying that Chandler is gay, so Chandler posts one saying that Ross is dead.
The way to handle that possibility would be for baratron to ring her friend again, and leave a message asking him to call her, because he should be told that someone has access to his email and is sending out such messages. A postal letter might also be appropriate here.
I had thought about that as a possibility - at least one of the fake internet deaths I'm aware of involved a sibling who'd been given access to the password to tell people that Y had been in a car accident and wouldn't be around for a few days, and instead told them she was in a coma and was going to die.
Sadly, X's "assistant" wrote using X's normal Gmail email account. And the original "X is in a coma" message was sent about a week ago. Yet X has been online using his Gmail email account for mailing list stuff. So the likelihood of him not being in on it is slim to none :/
I think what the prevelence of Munchausen syndrome by email proves is that if real Munchausen syndrome didn't involve creating the symptoms of some ailment or other more people would be doing it.
PS Gavin wouldn't notice a house mate in a coma until he needed to bum money off them.
PPS I was going to say gaving wouldn't notice a house mate in a coma until they died and started to stink the place out but I've smelt his room before and he wouldn't notice.
