I was just on the verge of coming out of sleep, just barely hearing the plinking of rain against the windows, when I heard the bedroom door open and close. Toddler-sized movement across the carpet floor. Early. I hoped she just wanted a snuggle. Could've done with about three more hours of sleep after the late service at the restaurant. On weekend mornings, little kids are determined to be the deaths of their parents-- even if it's only because of their unholy need to get up at O Dark Hundred and wake the household with them. Hungry kids are even worse!

But what a nice snapshot this offered of that whole dynamic, and of the fact that we love them in spite of those sleepless nights. :)

Sounds exactly right to me! We just enacted our own family version of this. Okay. Fine. Yes, I’ll get up and we can go get some breakfast. Not as simple and pure as me getting up and making something myself, as here. But man, I get it. This is beautiful. And grind-y. And true.

Such a wonderful vignette and you wrote it so well. The dialog was great and the whole thing brought back memories. I was the pancake maker, and I made them chocolate chip pancakes in the shapes of dinosaurs, teddy bears, and hearts. Those were the days!
