hope is a punishment; did you know that? it's a gift, one of Pandora's. it was the last one rattling around in that box of hers - and many men hear it rattling about in the boxes of her daughters. it has never left. and when modern day romanticists tell the tale of Pandora they say that this last gift, locked inside with plagues and genocide and LJ boredom, was a blessing; they think it is the thing that keeps mankind alive. they're wrong, of course. it is what kept the evils of the first woman's box around - instead of fighting their torments, they began to hope their torments would end. it brought about the dreamers, the storytellers, the idling poets and playwrites who talk of better worlds with closed eyes that always began with tomorrow or soon or someday but never today. it killed all but a few of the fighters who sought the better world instead of hoping for it. it's a story that would never be told if the storytellers knew its meaning. just something to think about, i suppose.
