My human genome posters arrived today! I ordered them about four months ago and had totally forgotten about them. They were free, from the Department of Energy, Office of Science, Genome Program. I'm not sure why the DOE is doing stuff with the human genome, but I'm all for it. And free posters ( Read more... )

Supposedly there's an online version of one poster at http://www.ornl.gov/hgmis/posters/chromosome/ , but that site seems to be down at the moment. It has depictions of 23 chromosomes and notes selected "genes, traits, and disorders" that are carried on each.

The other one is a bit more basic and has a stylized double helix and some blurbs about how DNA is relevant and useful in all sorts of areas. The first one's more interesting, though I imagine the second would be good for science teachers to use in their classrooms.

I like their disclaimer: "The Human Genome Landmarks poster is for educational purposes only, and is not intended to provide medical advice." For some reason, I'm picturing people engaging in DIY gene therapy with a bench full of equipment and consulting their handy poster as they go along...
