What a wonderful and truly unique story! I can't tell you how much I love this. Must rec it immediately. Fabulous writing! Pacing, characterizations, plot: everything of the best.

I do wonder what happened to Jamey. Maybe there's another story there?

*hugs you, bouncing*

Wow! That's a tremendous compliment, GM; I thank you so very much! *is hugely flattered*

Y'know, my mother, who read my drafts, has been bugging me about Jamey all week. She also wants to know what becomes of him! I must admit, he grew quickly on me too...I may have to see what he gets up to in future installments. :)

*hugs you back, hard*

“Could use him at Shipwreck Cove if he can read and write,” said Jamey coolly
I have to say, this line caused much squee when I read it. :D I have to agree, finding out what happened to Jamey would be great, especially since Jack looks up to him so much. And now I've said that, please don't kill him! *looks hopeful* :)

*LOL* Okay, darlin'...I won't kill him--consider him hale and healthy! ;)

Thanks so very much for reading and commenting! I'm really excited to hear how fond folks are of Jamey ('cause I've got a big ole' crush on him myself).

That was my prompt and I'm so glad you took it! It's exactly what I was hoping for: something that feeds my craving for literateyetroguish!Jack but is totally different from what I could write myself.
I had to read it much too fast, and now I don't have time to comment as it deserves. So I'll just pick out my very favourite bits.
Jack loving the letters of JOHANNES - his beautiful name. And carving them into the ship - just perfect!
The way you work the cartographer in - and Jack's figuring out what the word has to mean.
Father Cassidy - wonderful OC in just a few glimpses but I feel I know him well.

Oh! It was your prompt! Nice one! Sorry I had to divorce it from the C. of E., but the bunny bit me hard with this one. I'm so very glad you liked it anyway :) I also adore the idea of literate!Jack and I'm delighted your prompt gave me the chance to write him as such.

About his name: we all know it's canon that Jack Sparrow is a bit obsessed with his name, but I felt it had to go back much further. It's hard for us, in an almost entirely literate society, to understand the power of being able to write one's name at a time when most people, when they had to sign something, just made their "mark." I could just picture John, newly introduced to the wonder of letters--a whole new world, really--being absolutely blown away that he could make himself a part of that world by learning to write his name. I think he would have loved the permanence of that in his very unsettled life.

After I decided he would carve his name into his father's ship at the end, I knew I had to make the ship the future Black Pearl. I like the idea that ( ... )

After I decided he would carve his name into his father's ship at the end, I knew I had to make the ship the future Black Pearl. I like the idea that somewhere in the bowels of the Pearl is Jack's personal graffiti from so long past. It also "marks" the Pearl as his long before she ever was.

Yay, yay, yay - this especially, but also the whole thing, makes me do a happy dance! I also love all the local and period details you used. *dances*

Oh thank you, honey! What a kind thing to say!

I am a great believer in the long-standing romance between Jack and the Pearl...and given the chance, I just made it a bit more long-standing!

*dances with you*

Thanks so much for your lovely compliment! I've always been fascinated by the patently strange relationship set up between Jack and Teague, which is at once familiar yet terribly, terribly strained, and this gave me the perfect opportunity to puzzle it out.

(And we'll all carefully overlook the fact that Teague has no Irish accent whatsoever LOL!)

Thanks again!
