Hi, I'm the author of Hachoir program and I'm happy that you used it to recover data or at least understand your hard drive structure :-) Some tools do exist to find partition start and size like parted and TestDisk. Oh wow, I never thought you'd come across this post! Hi, and thank you for Hachoir -- it is a nifty tool. :)

I did give parted a go, actually, but the HD was simply too fubar'ed and parted couldn't make anything useful of it, unfortunately. Hence, Hachoir to the rescue. :)
