Hard drive recovery explanations

Okay. As promised, here's a short* article on how I went about recovering my data off a dead hard drive. The topic is inherently mucho technical, but I'm trying to write it in such a way it remains a pleasant and interesting read for the less technically inclined among you guys. Hi, I'm the author of Hachoir program and I'm happy that you used it to recover data or at least understand your hard drive structure :-) Some tools do exist to find partition start and size like parted and TestDisk. Oh wow, I never thought you'd come across this post! Hi, and thank you for Hachoir -- it is a nifty tool. :)

I did give parted a go, actually, but the HD was simply too fubar'ed and parted couldn't make anything useful of it, unfortunately. Hence, Hachoir to the rescue. :)
