But as this was The Norm in the old days of my now-defunct non-fannish LJ, wherein my flist was mostly made up of fetish models and goths, my perspective here might be different than if I were coming more exclusively from fandom.

Ahh, that makes a lot of sense! And yeah, when I chose to make my icon a picture of me I was thinking about the rest of the internet and how people on forums and things usually used pictures of themselves rather than fannish-type pictures. Which has really changed a lot over the years, I think! I'm sure fewer people in the gereral ether of the internet use their actual pictures these days. I could be wrong though!
