Picturing History: A Meta post on memory

Maybe you noticed that a few of my post titles are called "Picturing History"? You might have chalked this up to bad title-imagination, and you wouldn’t be far wrong - but there is also an underlying method to the madness.

This then is a meta-like post trying to sort out all the different arguments and views I’ve played with in the Picturing ( Read more... )

I agree - I think our memories and culture are interconnected and that they are a significant part of who we are. I especially noticed it since I moved to UK. As you say - all the significant dates, many books and films that I watched as a child are different to my friend's. It was strange at first - like I could not connect, but I am building it faster and faster now.

And YAY! The painted Caligula made me very amused. Thank you!!!

Exactly. I've experienced the same thing, though I suspect on a smaller scale. I always notice it when I' talking to someone who isn't a Scandinavian about aspects of my life that I take for granted. The 17th of May being a very good example - huge importance to me, not so much to the rest of the world.

The painted Caligula is rather funny looking, isn't he? *g* And what tickles me is that for a Roman he wouldn't be funny looking at all - but quite normal. But for us he just looks odd.
(also - there is some amusement in seen the mad, bad Caligula with rosy cheeks. ;) )

And speaking of Rome - just a few days until season two! Yay!

Everything about this post has made me think - thank you. I especially loved the Capa post - and the photos.

Thank you. That a post of mine can make people think about something is a great honour to hear. Especially since I love to read posts that make me think, it gives me the feeling that I'm giving something back.

And I'm rather fond of the Capa post - so I love hearing positive things about that. ;)

Can you watch Region 1 DVDs? Assuming I set everything up right, I DVRed a program on Capa for you tonight, and I'll burn it to DVD if you'll be able to watch it.
