After much debate w/ my mother about this over the years, I managed to get to her admit that we had actually traveled into Virginia during the vacation we took to visit Washington, DC way back when. So, I'm actually down to 9 states left to visit.

Umm, given mom's memory, to be on the safe side, you should probably travel through Virgina on your way to Vermont.
