It holds up just fine - I've made it before and have never had a problem. The only decorating tips I have are either very small or just basic, like I used, and I've never done any actual decorating. The consistency is pretty much the same as regular buttercream.
I've seen recipes that use coconut oil instead of margarine - I think you can get some that's not coconutty, but I'm not well-versed in alt frostings yet.
im quite fussy when it comes to cooked pears but im really glad you included a pic showing the inside of the cake. the pear compote looks really good. And i especially liked the use of caradom in the compote :)

You could always use an apple compote instead!
