Jaffa Cakes

Okay, Brits will totally call me on the use of orange curd instead of orange jelly. All apologies for that adaptation, but I couldn't resist the curd; I'd rather have a ton of that lying around than orange marmalade, which all recipes I found called for. And it's true, the curd is far messier than a jelly would be. Ooey, gooey messy and delicious. ( Read more... )

Even if my cakes got overbaked (I need to get a thermometer for this oven), the curd and chocolate cover really disguise it. So tasty!

I hadn't either, until the theme came up. Then I was all, hmmm, Jaffa!

I have just made a jar of lemon curd and a jar of cranberry curd, and I am considering them as a pleasant substitution here... (But I also love orange marmalade and would be just as delighted to make "real" Jaffa Cakes, which I also love.)

Oooh, I think the cranberry would be especially good. I might make these again, jelly version, and also to see if I can get them prettier. Maybe lock the cat in his room for the duration.

Whenever my family go to France they always stock up on the different flavour of 'Jaffa' cakes that they sell over there - I can only ever find standard orange ones in the UK but over there they have all sorts of different flavours of these. So good!

Do you think a bar shape might be easier to eat, and therefore less messy, than a circle? They look delicious regardless, I just wondered if a different shape might lead to less overspill :)

Possibly. The one I sampled ended up a mess even before I took a bite, and the one I sampled later was much less messy. ;)

I think you could use a recipe for curd that doesn't use near as much sugar, to get a nice tang going. I'd also cook it down more if I could do it over - get it nice and thick. The cakes aren't overly sweet and if you use a nice bitter dark chocolate ... mmm.

Before I saw what you're made I read that and thought I might have to correct 'jam' for 'jelly', but Jaffa Cakes are more of a jelly so I didn't need to, haha :)

These look good! I love things like orange creme chocolates so these definitely get a thumbs-up from me.
