I made this very recipe as part of my holiday presents this year. I found the icing a bit too sweet. I ended up dunking some of them in leftover bittersweet chocolate and then putting them in the candycane.
Unlike the original picture from the source recipe at http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/Peppermint-Meltaways neither of our icing seemed to stand up (mine looked just like yours). If anyone has any suggestions on that, I'd appreciate it. I even tried adding some cornstarch. While that helped, it wasn't stiff enough.
I got mine out of the newspaper with all the coupons. The image had the icing laying flat too. I don't really know what they did to make it stand like that.
