...at what degree of cousinness is it okay to get married and have kids?

Legally? I think it's second cousins in the modern world.

And I officially curse your eyes for making me type that into google.

In Utah they allow first cousin marriages-- I think. Genetically speaking, it's not really that good for kids. The Pennsylvanian Old Order Amish have been marrying first cousins for centuries and they now have at least two very serious genetic conditions common in their kids.

Long time ago I had a terrible crush on my red-headed cousin Rob, but I was 14, he was already married and all googly-eyed over his wife, and she was out to THERE with her first child...

Must be that back-woods Mormon in me. Y'see, my g-g-g-gramma on my father's side was the FOURTH wife.

Hmm...I'll have to look into how close and how often you can safely do it. (Not that I want to set it up as SOP, but I doubt my MC's grandparents were the first case ever.) Looks like I've got my own interesting Googling to do. :p

Yuck. Charles of Wales. Fortunately his late wife brought some beauty into the family.

Elizabeth's children generation of Windsors all seem to have that characteristic vapid, arrogant 'nobody's home' horse-faced stare down pat. Though Wessex is kinda cute in a balding sort of way.

Please say that this is for a story and has nothing to do with you in real life. :-)
