There was no such rating here. :) I seem to recall mothers carrying their infants in to watch. It was probably 1983, though the movie is dated 1982, since the latest movies took months before getting here. These days we can get pirated DVDs *before* the movie's official cinema release in the U.S. Times have changed. :)
What was so terrible about "E.T." that it required an 11 rating, besides the fact that he died horribly about 3/4 of the way through?

Go watch "E.T.", it was one of the movies instrumental in building Spielberg's wunderkind reputation as a director! Magical, but without the mawkish quality of his poorer films. I didn't realise it at the time, but Elliot's domestic situation was realistically unpleasant: broken home, absent father, intolerably adolescent brother and clingy sister. His relationship with E.T. was the prototype for Disney's Lilo and Stitch!
