Chapter 11

It was the day before Annabelle’s eighteenth birthday, and Annabelle felt she was slowly going insane. Her mother was preparing a birthday party in her honour. Miranda was doing her best to have a perfect birthday party for her daughter. Annabelle loved that her mom was doing this for her but her mom had the weirdest ideas for a party. Things like a man who would spit fire, a magician, and a man with a snake act. Annabelle was just glad her mother wasn’t thinking of a clown; they scared her. Her mother didn’t usually do stuff like this so she gave her mom credit for attempting. She was happy that her mother wanted to do this; it was a step in the right direction for their relationship. So before weird stuff began to happen Annabelle decided that a talk with her mom was in order.

"Mom. Can I talk to you for a sec?" Annabelle said to her mom who was busy talking to a person.

"Uh, sure sweetheart", Miranda said.

Annabelle and her mother walked to a spot where they could talk privately. Seeing that no one was paying attention to them, Annabelle started to speak.

"Look mom. I love that you are doing this but it’s a little too much", Annabelle said carefully, she didn’t know how her mom would react.

"What do you mean?", Miranda asked her daughter confused.

"The magician and the snake act and stuff, over the top", Annabelle said rolling her eyes.

"Oh that. I thought it was a little too much yeah", Miranda said. "Look it’s sweet that you are planning this for me but a simple party with the people I love is enough, besides I’m turning eighteen not five", Annabelle said honestly.

"I’m sorry Annabelle. I just wanted to make you happy", Miranda said looking down finding the design of the carpet very interesting.

"It’s ok mom. The fact that you are spending my birthday with me makes me happy", Annabelle said developing her mother in a tight hug.

"I’m glad I came to my senses and can spend time with you again. You make me so happy and proud Annabelle. I love you", Miranda said placing a kiss on Annabelle’s head.

"I love you too mom", Annabelle said giving her mom a squeeze.

"I better go cancel a few things. Oh Annabelle, what would you like to have for your party then?", Miranda asked her.

"Just a cool band or a DJ is good", Annabelle said.

Mom and daughter went their own ways. Miranda walked back to the living room to make some phone calls, while Annabelle walked back to her room. Finally in the quietness of her room Annabelle decided to make a phone call to her love. Just one more day and they would be together. Dialling her lover’s phone number she waited for Simone to pick up. After a minute she heard her lover’s voice that she wasn’t there at the moment. Frustrated she couldn’t hear her love’s voice she decided to send her a message so she would call her back.

"I really wanted to hear your voice today so I hope you will call me back soon.
I miss you and can’t wait for tomorrow.
Love you always. A"

All Annabelle had to do was wait for Simone to call her back. Minutes ticked by. Feeling bored she grabbed her notebook and start writing a song. After writing a few lines she got up from her bed and grabbed her guitar. Getting it out of it’s case she walked back to her bed to sit down and play the song.  Satisfied with the song so far; Annabelle looked at her phone to see if she had received a message. No message. Annabelle felt depressed that Simone hadn’t called back yet. Normally she didn’t have to wait for a return for a call or message; Simone usually answered or called right back. Annabelle told herself that Simone was probably busy. Simone was looking for work and maybe she had found something she liked.

’But wouldn’t she have called me to tell me that she had found something? Maybe she didn’t have time yet to tell me. Right? That must be it’, Annabelle thought.

Her uneasy thinking and the quietness of her room didn’t suit her anymore so Annabelle went downstairs. Simone probably would call her tonight to tell her what she had done that day, that she loved her, and everything would be ok. Feeling better with that idea, Annabelle walked downstairs. Maybe her mom could cheer her up.

*******

Miranda had been successful in cheering her daughter up. Mom and daughter shared a nice dinner and pleasant conversation. They spent hours talking about Annabelle when she was young. All the crazy things Annabelle did as a young child. Annabelle and Miranda had spent the hours laughing so hard that tears rolled down their faces and their stomach hurt from laughing so much.

It was getting late and Annabelle decided to call it a night. Tomorrow would be eventful; she needed to rest up.

"I’m going to bed mom. See you tomorrow" Annabelle said kissing her mother on the cheek.

"Goodnight sweetheart. Sleep well. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day", Miranda said giving her daughter a last hug before letting her daughter go upstairs.

Annabelle smiled at her mom and walked slowly up the stairs. Finally reaching her room she immediately went in search for her phone. Finding her phone on her desk she checked for message and phone calls she may have missed. No messages. Annabelle felt sick to her stomach. ‘What if something happened to her? No she is alright, she has to be. What if…No stop that. Simone would never do anything like that. Maybe she had a very busy day and was too tired to call. I bet she will call first thing tomorrow’.

Happy with the final thought, Annabelle got ready for bed. Sliding under the covers she turned off the light. Settling down in bed she closed her eyes and tried to fall asleep. But that uneasy feeling in her stomach was still there. Trying hard not to think about it she fell in a uneasy sleep.

Annabelle woke up to a soft caresses of her cheek. Slowly opening her eyes she saw her mother. Annabelle stretched out and sat up in her bed rubbing her eyes to wake up.

"Good morning sweetheart. Happy birthday", Miranda said with a huge smile on her face kissing her daughter cheek.

"Mmm, morning", Annabelle said still half asleep.

"I brought you something", Miranda sat handing her daughter a tray with breakfast on it.

"Mmm, looks good", Annabelle said a little bit hungry. Annabelle looked over the items trying to decide what she would eat first. She settled on the toast with jam first. Munching on her toast she suddenly realized it was her eighteen birthday and she was finally an adult. It was also not to be forgotten that she would be getting a lot of presents today.

"So is this my birthday present? Or do I get something better", Annabelle said with a knowing smile. She knew she would get a present from her mother. Probably a expensive one.

"I thought you who liked the idea of breakfast in bed", her mother said pretending to be hurt.

"You know I do. It’s sweet and yummy", Annabelle said grinning before she continued to eat her toast.

"Anyway of course you will get your present. You will get it as soon as you are done and dressed properly", Miranda said teasing her daughter. Annabelle rolled her eyes at her mother.

While continuing eating her breakfast Annabelle went through her closet in her mind to picked an outfit. Finishing her breakfast she gave the plate back to her mother before getting out of bed and going to her closet.

"Ok I’m going to get dressed. Now shoo", Annabelle said playfully before playfully pushing her mother towards the door.

"What. I’m not allowed to see you naked? It wouldn’t be the first time you know", Miranda said.

"MOM! Annabelle said a little embarrassed, "Just go ok".

Miranda laughed at her daughter’s obvious embarrassment and walked out of the door to give her some privacy. She closed the door behind her she walked downstairs. Miranda decided to make a few phone calls while she waited for her daughter to come downstairs to give her the present.

Annabelle chose the clothes she want to wear and laid them out on her bed. A worn pair of jeans, a black low cut (sexy) tank top and a black belt. Next Annabelle walked into her bathroom. She went over to the shower and turned it on. She adjusted the temperature before slowly undressing herself. Undressed, she stepped in the shower and began to wash her body. Annabelle always did love a shower in the morning, it woke her up and left her ready to face the day.

Finished showering, she turned off the shower and stepped out. Grabbing and took a towel and wrapped it around herself. Annabelle walked out of the bathroom into her room and sat on her bed. The thought of Simone not returning her call came back into her mind. Annabelle got up and walked over to where her phone lay on the nightstand and picked it up. No messages. Annabelle didn’t understand it. She was really starting to get worried now. Dialling Simone’s number once again hoping she would pick up this time. Maybe she was still asleep and didn’t have time yet to call or sent a message back yet. Still no answer.

Annabelle got up off the bed and began to pace. She was really worried now. Standing there for a minute, she resolved there wasn’t anything she could do from her room so she decided to get dressed and do her hair. After she dressed, Annabelle went back into the bathroom and dried her hair. After styling her hair she walked back into her room over to her dresser and finished off the outfit with some matching jewellery.

Annabelle looked at herself in mirror, ‘Damn, I look good!’ Headed back into the bathroom one last time Annabelle to brush her teeth before heading downstairs in search of her mother. Maybe she knew something.  Annabelle found her mom in the kitchen.

"Mom. Do you know something about Simone?", Annabelle asked worried.

"She still hasn’t called yet?" her mother asked confused. Annabelle shook her head. Sitting, rather falling into the closest chair Annabelle held her head in her hands. She was worried sick about Simone. Slowly tears fell from her eyes. Miranda noticing her daughter was crying silently went to sit next to her daughter. Placing a comforting hand on her shoulder Miranda tried to offer ideas as to where Simone could be. Annabelle hardly heard a word her mom said. Desperate for a hug she fell into her mothers arms. The feeling of her mother’s loving arms comforted her a little. But still the question remained. Where was Simone? Annabelle had finally stopped crying. The her mother’s embrace relaxed her a little. Annabelle was sure there would be a good explanation why Simone hadn’t answered her yet; Simone would never hurt her like that. She just hoped she would find out sooner rather than later.

"Everything will be alright Annabelle. I just know it will be", Miranda said trying to cheer her daughter up.

"Of course it will be", Annabelle said although she didn’t really believe her own words. All she wanted was to have Simone her in her arms letting her know everything was alright. Until that moment, she would be worried.

"What about if I give you your present?", Miranda said smiling.

"Eh, sure I would like that" Annabelle said without the normal warmth in her voice.

Miranda knew her daughter was feeling miserable and she understood her worry. She too would be frantic with worry if the person she cared about hadn’t returned a call. She too was worried about Simone; she liked her and knew she was good for her daughter. But the protective side of said if Simone did something that would hurt her baby she would hunt Simone down. But deep in her heart Miranda knew that Simone had a good reason.

Miranda got up from her chair and stretched out her hand to her daughter. Annabelle looked at it before taking it and getting up as well. Together they walked in the living room. Miranda sat her daughter down on the couch before walking away. After getting Annabelle to agree to close her eyes and to open it when she said so Miranda came back in the living room with the gift in her arms. She placed her gift on her daughter’s lap and told her to open her eyes. Annabelle slowly opened her eyes. Looking down at her lap she gasped. There on her lap was a tiny little fur ball. A Chocolate lab puppy. Annabelle looked at her mom with a huge smile on her face for a second and then hugged the puppy close.

"Oh my god!. I love it mom!! A puppy. I can’t believe it!", Annabelle said stroking the puppy.

"I knew you always wanted a dog when you where little and that you still want one so I thought it would be appropriate to give you one", Miranda said laughing at her daughters childish behaviour.

"Thank you mom. I love it. I love you", Annabelle said kissing her mother’s cheek who had sat down next to her on the couch.

"Your welcome. And I love you too", Miranda said stroking the puppy as well. Annabelle and her mother played with the puppy for a while. Her mother told Annabelle that she also bought all kinds of stuff for the dog.

"So what are you going to call him?" Miranda asked.

"I think I’m going to call him Buddha", Annabelle said petting the puppy.

"Hello Buddha", Miranda said to the puppy. Redirecting her attention back to Annabelle she said, "You still have one more present to open", Miranda said giving her daughter an envelop.

Annabelle took the envelop from her mother and opened it. What she found made her gasp once again. In it was ten one-hundred dollar bills. Annabelle looked at her mother.

"That’s a lot of money", Annabelle said with wide eyes.

"I know, but I know that you will spend it for something good and not for useless things", Miranda said honestly.

"Wow thanks mom. I don’t know what to say. Of course I will spend it for something I really love", Annabelle said before developing her mother in a big hug.

"Ok let’s get things started for your birthday. And take the little guy out", Miranda said pointing to Buddha.
