i have to admit, i re-wrote that bit almost a zillion times because i wanted it to portray said familiarity (and perhaps even neal's tendency to be in charge of the group without having appointed himself leader of some sort).

Oh man, I adore HS AUs. I really loved the characterization here, how Cook is so unsure and Neal is just like, yep, we're doing this - completely nonchalant and relaxed about it. Not to mention shotgunning? Always hot. (And Kyle being the semi-whiny little one and disappearing to go play hide and go seek, just lol.) This was great. :)
