See, for how little I know about Korean film, at least I can recommend some pretty decent titles, eh? ;) (I'm still trying to remedy my ignorance -- got a few Netflixed and I've got tickets to a couple Korean flicks in this year's San Francisco Int'l Film Fest.)
I've never doubted your taste in movies, even if I am the 'Korean film person' :P; my movie watching is just, you know. Sporadic! Actually had an interesting discussion @ the bar last week with one of the European history grads. The question was 'what's the most tender moment you've seen on film?'; I whipped out a couple from my Korean arsenal & he then asked about Old Boy (I still canNOT believe they're remaking that. Urk).
I'd say you must watch Seopyeonje, if only to see what spawned 'Korean national cinema,' but Netflix only has the 'sequel' that isn't a sequel!!
Do keep me posted on what you're watching in Korea-land, I'm always interested in new must-sees. :)
I saw *Obaltan* a while back... that was pretty good, and very interesting to compare to other postwar film realism movements, esp. Taiwan.
I can pick up Seopyeonje at our library. Happy to report that they're allowing videos to be checked out overnight now, instead of having everything on strict lockdown as they did when they first moved everything over.
