Sounds like a fascinating book. There's another one that chronicles three generations too; it's called just that -- "Three Generations", by Yom Sang Seop, about the colonial period and the influx of Marxism during the period.

Hmm, haven't talked to you in a while. I've been swamped with work and taking Korean classes. Hope all is well!

It was super interesting from a historical perspective. From pure literary genius, I think everything was too neatly structured/tied up, but I always try to cut social critiques like this a little slack, since there's a point and all.

I guess it's a pretty famous Korean book? It was apparently made into a very popular TV mini-series. The introduction also said it's famous for the richness of the Korean used. I, of course, wouldn't know anything about that, but maybe someday. :)

I'll see if I can find the book you're talking about, too. I got an interesting monograph on the period from 1895-1919, looking at newspaper and the rise of Korean nationalism and repositioning themselves vis-a-vis Japan & China in that oh-so-confusing period. I'm looking forward to it. Sounds like the guy mostly used newspapers as his sources. Should be interesting.

Things are going pretty well here. Busy busy with Chinese, but I started classical this semester which I just fall more and more in love with.
