So I'm sick of using only my laptop. Granted it saves power, smaller, and portable, but I think I should really get a desktop that has some power to it

I like ASUS motherboards but that's all a matter of opinion.
What kind of gaming do you plan on doing or, rather, what do you expect of the video card? I know GeForce in and out.
Nobody needs a sound card anymore. Or a NIC unless you're going for wireless or gigabit transfer speeds and yes, these two things are built in.
If you're even considering 6GB of RAM I have to assume you're looking at 64 bit OSes. Which one?
WD drives are fine. Your other options are kind of Maxtor and Seagate.
Any recent motherboard would be upgradable?
Fuck shuttles if you want to have room to upgrade and...
No, unless you're doing crazy SLI you won't want it and it requires that you buy two matching video cards to hook them up in tandem. The performance increase is around 25% at best realistically speaking and if that's the case just spend the money on a better card.
Build, just check the warranties on the parts you buy. Some parts mfg.'s have lifetime warranties and that's pretty worth it if you ask me.
-Screw Maxtor/Seagate. End of story. I've had much better history with WD. -Probably going Vista. I haven't had much problems with it. Going to wait on Windows 7. Don't know if I really need 64-bit OS though...what would be the point? -No upgradable mobo's...computers I have are way too old. -I like Shuttles in terms of size, but yeah I thought they might be too small for upgrades (and I can only imagine the heat issues). I also am split with form factor since I'll need a new board...sounds silly, I know.
I'm telling you that any motherboard you go out and purchase will be upgradable, dorkus!
Get something that fits in an ATX midtower. All the room for upgrades you could want.
If you're going to get anything over 4GB of RAM you need a 64 bit OS to support it. 32 bit OSes only support 4GB of RAM max (and you'll only technically see about 3.4). Vista 64 is a shitheap of problems in my experience. I haven't had a problem with Windows 7 yet on my laptop. But on my desktop I still stick with XP.
No HD manufacturer has done me better than any other and none of them guarantee data. Your best bet is backing things up the right way if it's that important to you.
Again, 6GB of RAM only supported in 64 bit (AKA buggy) OSes.
EVGA and BFG both do lifetime warranties and if he's not going to be fucking with the heatsinks on his card (which I doubt) then it doesn't matter which one you pick, lifetime is lifetime. BFG just doesn't support physical modifications to the card and they do factory overclocking.
Comparing Vista32 to Vista64 is like comparing a pile of shit to a pile of shit with chunks of corn in it.
It's still shit. =D
W7 can't come out quick enough. And hopefully, it won't be plauged with nearly as many problems as V64 was. (I know you can technically get W7 now, but I didn't bother with the beta or early builds, cause I didn't want to deal with those bugs. Heh)

That's why he wants WD over those two.
Personally, I prefer Maxtor, but again, personal preference. Heh

Also it's a joke to say Crysis benefits from SLI because it really doesn't and is heavily noted for having immense problems with SLI.
4GB limitation, you'll only see 3.4 or so but it recognizes up to 4 total.

Personally, I just think SLI/XFire are marketing gimmicks, but try telling that to the uber 1337tists. lol
Anyhow, June, if you're worrried about moveability in a PC (ie, the shuttle), then get a laptop. =P
