"The Dark Is Rising" is (rightfully) beloved by many people, but the ending of the series has some deep problems for an awful lot of people.

If you like fanfiction, there's tons of it. It's a perennial favorite for Yuletide. But I recommend finishing the series first.

Over Sea, Under Stone feels much "younger" than the other four volumes, and it's not clear to me whether Cooper had imagined the rest of the series when she wrote it.
