Aaaaaagh, the Tokyopop news! I saw that too, and am currently in the midst of being sad and upset and disappointed and anxious all over again. I'm sad they're losing Asako! and Lillian!!! and everyone else... I really thought Tpop was doing better and stabilizing!! Sigh. I'll keep buying their books of course, but it's really too bad

"... am currently in the midst of being sad and upset and disappointed and anxious all over again" Same, here. It's like CMX all over again in a different way. It may not have anything to do with the hiatus article, but I can't help but wonder ... And TP has picked up some great titles, too. Sigh! Oh, I forgot to mention that Ririko Tsujita's male characters look like those of Nari Kusakawa. I didn't expect to find Cross Game so good. Shonen isn't usually my cup of tea :)
Yeah, it reminds me of CMX too... (and sheesh, poor Asako!) At least they're not cutting any manga (yet?), but it's not a good sign for Tokyopop, and it's really unfortunate for the actual people involved. Ugh.
You know, I never got into Nari Kusakawa's work. I read some of Gertrude from the library, slightly out of order and skipping a couple volumes I couldn't find. She probably deserves a more proper investigation ^^;
I don't read much shounen either, but Adachi is old-school style, which I do favour :D Some years ago a friend of mine let me borrow his volumes of Short Program, and I remembered enjoying them, so I though I should give this a try. Did you know Adachi has done shoujo manga in the past? Way back in the 70s-80s (of course, that's also when shoujo-sports-manga was popular). So he's kind of on our side, hehe :D
It's strange, I thought there were more of Nari Kusakawa's work licensed, but there are only 3. Anyway, The Recipe for Gertrudge is a very strange mange, I must say. My favorite is Two flowers for the dragon which was cut short! 12 color palette is interesting. Her art is definitely not pretty. I wonder I got used to it and like it because I read more of her series! I didn't know Adachi did Shojo. I've read his Short Program, and there is another one with the girl whose father is a private investigator but had to return the 2nd volume because it was due and I was distracted by other series at that time - I should say that I had borrowed more than I could have read!
We wouldn't necessarily compare layoffs at TokyoPop to CMX shutting down. TP's still technically in business, for one thing. It's more like when TokyoPop restructured back in '08. Back then, one of the senior editors who was let go popped up as the new adapter on one of our titles, so you can see TokyoPop's not so cruel as to just throw them out the door. But of course we wish them the best of luck finding steady new jobs (assuming these reports are true--we have yet to hear anything from any of the people in question).
"We wouldn't necessarily compare layoffs at TokyoPop to CMX shutting down..." That's true. It's just feel that way from a consumer's point of view. I was hoping that with the news that Platinum Garden 8 is released next month after 3 years break that TP's business is looking up. So the news was a bit shocking. I'm so glad that it was a cutting cost and one continues working as a freelance. I was hoping that's the case. Thanks for the clarifications. I didn't think the CEO of TP is heartless. I guess they can't talk about these things in details in the press. I'll be glad to see familiar names in the list of credits in futures volumes.

Some points: - borrowed from ILL to read since I only read up to chapter 20 from Ikki. - However, I ended up reread the whole book since I couldn't remember what was going :) - I'm surprised the character has money to travel to many countries to chase after a book! I guess it makes good story telling even though it may not be realistic.
