Oh, yay, you're comparing Maid Sama! translations! We've seen two reviews of the new release so far and neither of them compared the two different versions, so we were like, "Hey, what's the point in reviewing the same thing again unless you're going to tell us why we should or should not care about this new one?"
We were kind of bummed that they didn't get us to do the new one (even knowing that Viz never gets us for anything), but not for very long, because we don't have time for the inordinately time-consuming Maid Sama!.
ANN's reviewer made a comment about not having the TP edition on hand to compare but she still said the new translation was better. I was feeling a little indignant about that but now I remember your translation wasn't till later volumes anyway, so maybe she had a point about early volumes. Haha.
Badtz, I agree about the cover design (not just the colour but the whole design was really nice)! Tokyopop really excelled with those for their later series, and while Viz/Shojo Beat has some very lovely cover designs too, I would not consider Maid Sama's one of them.
If TP had continued existing/publishing the series I probably would have kept buying out of habit, but my love for the series (and support for the main couple) was already starting to wane by volume 8...
By the way, Hakusensha's so late with their next month's publishing list I checked Amazon JP instead. New Skip Beat! next month!!! (that's all I remember, besides obviously Yona 19 but I've got that preordered already.)
Actually I prefer Viz's cover for Maid sama. The whole art isn't cropped and the words on papers in Misaki's hands are translated. But the dark purple color doesn't look great, it distracts from the art. Usui tones down stalking behavior in later volumes. It's too bad that your interest in the series waned. I'm hoping you give the shojo beat version a chance with volume 9-10, borrow from the library :) Hakusensha usually posts their next month after mid month. Sometimes, they are really early, others late. Thanks for the headsup. I'm curious about Yona's cover :) oh, new skip beat!
Though it's been a while since I read, I thought his behaviour in the middle volumes (the later ones TP printed) got more creepy/possessive/controlling. And there's the whole too-perfect thing... and in general I didn't care about whatever his tragic backstory was as much as about Misaki's history (which seemed to be getting ignored in his favour), and then the rival showed up and I liked him a lot better... (I don't remember the specifics of all my reasons anymore but this was the general idea.) I guess I could library the later volumes, but I've got so many books I own that I need to read (or never get tired of re-reading :) ), and other activities I hardly have time for, I don't really prioritize the series I've lost interest in. (I just complain about them when I have the chance, haha ^^;; )
I agree, Voice's ending was very rushed. I was sad to see it end, as the mangaka could have easily created another 3 or 4 volumes worth of good stuff, at least IMO!! I was a die-hard Mizuki/Hime shipper, so at least I have the teasing omake. *wistful sigh*
Ahhhh, Wanted. That book was a challenge! I'm hoping for a 2nd volume at some point, too, though I highly doubt I'd be asked to letter it. Woe.
So glad you read so many of my books! *happy smile*
My heart broke a little and I cried when I read volume 11, even though I'm team Senri. Poor Mizuki. Teasing omake was fun.
"another 3 or 4 volumes worth of good stuff, at least IMO!" Fanfic!!!! I'll read anything you write on this one, (forgive me if I had missed any already)
"That book was a challenge!" I could see that reading it. A lots of acrobatic fonts!
"... though I highly doubt I'd be asked to letter it. Woe." Oh, please let the editor know that you're interested if ever there's more of "Wanted" :)
