I defy anyone to be stoic with an itch. calamine lotion does help. I was told don't scratch, rub very gently

It does, but Jack is too impatient, he expects it to take effect the moment it's applied, which is, of course, not going to happen.

Even rubbing gently can hurt if you keep doing it to the same spot.
