Touching Audrey is a revelation. For so long Nathan’s whole body has been completely numb. He can’t feel anything, not heat or cold, pleasure or pain, the breeze in his hair or the rain on his skin. Even his clothes are like phantoms. He knows they’re there because he put them on, but he can’t feel them. Sometimes he has to look down at himself, or check his reflection in the mirror, just to be sure he hasn’t forgotten to dress, and every night he has to check his body for injuries. He could slice off a finger, or a whole arm, and not even notice until he bled out.

Then Audrey kisses him on the cheek and it’s as though his world has gone from monochrome to Technicolor in the blink of an eye, because he realises he can feel the softness of her lips against his skin, a tiny whisper of breath, and the sensation is so acute, so intense, that if he weren’t so in control over his emotions, he might have cried.

She’s immune to all the troubles, but somehow it had never occurred to him to wonder how her immunity might manifest in relation to his lack of sensation. In retrospect it seems obvious, she cancels out his numbness, and he might have fallen in love with her just for that, for allowing him to feel when she touches him, if he didn’t already love her for everything else she is; brave, smart, funny, caring, and stubbornly committed to helping every troubled person she can.

Each time she touches him, each time he touches her, sensation courses through his deadened nerves like wildfire, and it feels so good it almost hurts. It’s addictive, and yet he tries not to let himself be distracted by it, and for the longest time, he doesn’t tell her, half afraid that it might not last if he does. He wishes she could cure him permanently instead of just for brief moments, and maybe in time she’ll find a way to. Right now, working side by side, they’re curing one trouble at a time, but if they could end all of them, forever…

Nathan thinks he’ll do whatever it takes to rid Haven of the troubles; he keeps believing that right up until he learns what he’d have to give up to win even a short reprieve for the town: Audrey.

He can’t do it, can’t let her go, that’s too great a price; there has to be another way, a better, more permanent solution, and somehow they’re going to find it. But they’ll do it together.

The End
