Saying goodbye never seemed to get any easier, which was funny considering how often he seemed to be doing it these days. It seemed like only five minutes since Bikky came home for Thanksgiving, and he was already heading back to college. If only L.A. wasn’t so far away.
Ryo was proud of his son, already in his second year and doing really well, both in his classes and on the basketball court, but he missed having Bikky around. Still, college was proving good for him, and unlike some kids, he wasn’t using it as an excuse to get drunk and party all the time. He probably did his share of both, he was nineteen, but not to excess; Bikky was pursuing his lifelong dream, and he wasn’t going to let anything get in his way.
“Are you sure you’ve got everything? Where’s your plane ticket?”
“I’ve got it right here, dad. Stop worrying!”
“I can’t help it. You can’t just drop by from the other end of the country if you forget something.”
“I know, but I made a checklist like you taught me, and you were right there when I was packing.”
“I just hate this part; I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it. You always seem to be leaving.”
“But I’ll be home for Christmas in a few weeks. You won’t even have time to miss me.”
“Not true. I miss you already, and you haven’t even left yet! Why is it always so hard to say goodbye?”
“Because you care.” Bikky smiled at his foster father. “You always have, right from the first day. I’ll miss you too, always do, but I know you’re only a phone call away.”
“C’mon, Biks!” Dee shouted. “Your flight’s boardin’!”
“Gotta go. Bye, dad.”
“Have a safe flight.”
