Engrossed in the morning paper, Dee felt something nudging his leg and looked down to see Dick the dog, sitting there, tail wagging, holding his leash in his mouth.
“You want to go out?”
Dick’s tail wagged harder.
“Are you serious? Have you looked out the window? It’s snowing!”
That didn’t seem to dampen the dog’s enthusiasm in the slightest.
Ryo grinned across the table at his lover. “It’s your own fault, Dee. You’ve got him used to going to the dog park around this time if you’re not at work. Dogs like routine.”
“He’ll freeze!” Dee protested. “The snow must be a couple inches deep already, and he’s only got short legs.”
“So he’ll have to wear one of his waterproof coats, and the little boots.”
Dee winced. “Everyone at the dog park’s gonna laugh at him. Or at me.”
The dog pawed at Dee’s leg again, whining.
“Oh, fine. Just don’t complain about bein’ cold later.” Dee folded the paper and stood up, heading into the kitchen. Digging among the dog’s belongings, he got out a cosy coat and a set of little boots. “I must be outta my mind.”
Ten minutes later, the three of them set off down the street, wrapped up warm against the early snow, Dick trotting along beside the two men, sniffing at everything.
There weren’t many people at the park, thanks to the weather, only three other dogs with their owners, and to Dee’s surprise, they all had coats on, although Dick was the only dog with boots. That didn’t stop the miniature dachshund from scampering across the snow-covered grass to join his doggy friends the moment his leash was unclipped.
Dee stamped his feet, grumbling. “This is why I prefer cats. They have the sense to stay in when it’s cold.”
