Tosh wrapped her arms around herself and shivered. “Why is it old, deserted buildings always seem creepier on a dark, misty night than any other time?”
“Because we’ve been conditioned to think of darkness and fog as eerie, the proper setting for a horror story?” Ianto stared up at the derelict warehouse looming over them. In daylight, it would’ve merely looked rundown and in need of repair, but with fog swirling around it, and the shadows black as ink wherever the dim illumination from the streetlights didn’t reach, it wouldn’t have surprised him to see hundreds of bats steaming through the broken windows. It was that spooky.
“Just so you know, if we run into any ghosts in there, you’re on your own.”
“You’ll just abandon me?” Ianto raised an eyebrow.
“Yep. I won’t stop running until I’m back at the Hub.”
“Some friend you are. Come on, the sooner we find what the Rift left us, the sooner we can leave.” Ianto switched his torch on and carefully pushed the door open. “Normally I’d say we should split up, but in this case we’re better off staying together.”
“Oh, don’t worry, I’m sticking to you like glue.” Tosh linked arms with Ianto as they crept inside, where the darkness seemed as thick as treacle. She kept her eyes on the scanner in her hand so she didn’t have to see whatever might be lurking beyond the beam of light from Ianto’s torch.
In the end, they found no skeletons, no spooks, no spectres, not even any vampires, ghouls, or zombies, just a tattered cookery book from the nineteen-sixties. Picking it up, Ianto flipped through the pages and shuddered.
“This might just be the scariest thing I’ve ever seen.”
Tosh pulled a face. “Ugh! I think ghosts might’ve been preferable.”
