“Fifty grand,” the man grinned at Dee, smugly confident. “Fifty grand to just walk away and forget you ever saw me. Whaddaya say?”
“Are you tryin’ to bribe a police officer?”
“Okay, a hundred grand. You can’t tell me you couldn’t use that kinda money. Being a cop can’t pay that well.”
“It doesn’t,” Dee agreed. “Probably never will, and you’re right, I could do plenty with that kinda money, help a lot of people in need. If I was as rich as you, I sure as Hell wouldn’t be wastin’ my money buyin’ drugs just so me and my fat-cat buddies could get high at some party where all the guests got more money than sense. But y’know what? Money’s not everything, and I didn’t become a cop to get rich by takin’ bribes, so no deal.”
“You sure?”
“One hundred percent. My integrity as a cop is worth more to me than all the money in the world. What I do means somethin’. I’m tryin’ to make this great city a little safer for the people who live here, and what’re you doin’? Wastin’ your time and money on drugs. Bein’ wealthy doesn’t mean you’re above the law.”
