“I hate workin’ overtime,” Dee grumbled. If they’d been working a regular eight-hour shift, they’d have been heading home by now, looking forward to a good, homecooked dinner, and spending the evening relaxing on the sofa, maybe watching TV, or making out. Instead, here they were, battling their way through a mountain of paperwork, and making do with Chinese from the place down the street. Not that it was terrible or anything, but it couldn’t compare to Ryo’s cooking.
Ryo frowned across at his partner. “If you didn’t want to do it, why did you volunteer?”
“We’re gettin’ time and a half for this. You know as well as I do, we can use the money. Workin’ an extra half shift a couple times a week will give our savings a badly needed boost. Doesn’t mean I haveta enjoy it though.” Dee shovelled more noodles into his mouth, gulping them down almost without chewing, and picked up his pen again. “Besides, you were gonna volunteer even if I didn’t, and if you’re gonna suffer through four extra hours, the least I can do is help. Knowin’ you, you’d stay until you’d finished the paperwork, even if ya weren’t gettin’ paid.”
