Making his way up from the file room, his nose buried in the file he’d gone down there to find, Ryo was dragged back to the here and now by a voice calling his name.

“Detective Maclean! Just the man I was looking for. Could you spare a moment?”

Ryo closed the folder and turned to his superior. “Of course, Commissioner.” He smiled politely. “What can I do for you?”

“Ah, actually, it’s more a case of what I can do for you,” Commissioner Rose said smoothly, all suave confidence and easy smile. “I happen to have a spare ticket for the Boston Philharmonic tomorrow night. The friend I was going with unfortunately had to cancel, and I know it’s rather last minute, but I was wondering if perhaps you’d like to accompany me. I can promise you a most enjoyable evening.”

“Oh. It’s very kind of you to think of me, Commissioner, but I’m afraid I already have tickets.”

“I see. Well, it was just a thought. Perhaps I’ll see you there.” Rose looked disappointed.

“Yes, Sir. Perhaps you will, although I’m sure there’ll be a lot of people there. Last I heard, it was sold out.”

“Indeed. New case?” Rose indicated the file folder and Ryo shook his head.

“Old case, still unsolved, although it does have some similarities to a case we’re currently working on, so there might be a connection. Worth looking into anyway.”

“Of course. Well, I’ll let you get back to it then.” Rose strode back along the corridor towards his office.

“What was that all about?” Dee asked as Ryo reached his desk and sat down.

Ryo frowned. “Not sure, but I think the Commissioner might have been asking me out on a date. Apparently, he has a spare ticket for tomorrow night.”

“Left it a bit late to ask ya, didn’t he?”

“He could have asked me last month and it still would have been too late,” Ryo pointed out with a smile. “You surprised me with tickets weeks ago.”

“Had to make sure we could book the time off well in advance. Findin’ out at the last minute we’d been scheduled to work on the night would’a caused problems. Better to plan ahead, even if it means havin’ to spoil the surprise.”

“It hasn’t spoiled anything, Dee. Just given me more time to look forward to it.”

“Hope it’ll live up to your expectations. I’ve never been to a symphony, so…” Dee shrugged. “I don’t really have any expectations myself.”

“I appreciate you taking me. I know you’re not really interested in classical music, so I hope you won’t find it dull.”

“I won’t. I’ll be with you, that’s what matters. Sure I can count on ya to explain anything I don’t get.”

“It’s not like an opera, Dee, it’s just music. You sit quietly, you listen, and you… let it flow through you.”

“Yeah? Guess I can manage that.”

Although Dee didn’t expect to be bored as such, because time was never wasted when he spent it with Ryo, regardless of what they were doing, he didn’t honestly expect to enjoy the symphony. He’d bought the tickets with the money he’d saved by giving up smoking, knowing that seeing the Boston Philharmonic live was something his partner would love. So the following night, dressed in his smartest suit and best tie, he picked Ryo up from his apartment and they took a taxi to Carnegie Hall, where the Boston Philharmonic were putting on a special benefit performance, one night only.

As they stepped through the doors and surrendered their tickets, Ryo caught sight of Commissioner Rose, talking to the mayor and his wife, but pretended not to notice him, concentrating his attention on his lover instead and hoping Berkeley wouldn’t intrude. It would annoy Dee, who didn’t get along with the Commissioner, and spoil the evening. Thankfully, an usher was right there to direct them to their seats in the second tier, where they’d get a clear view of the stage while being close to a bar. Dee had chosen the seating area with that in mind, in case he needed something more than peoplewatching to keep him occupied through several hours of classical music.

“These are wonderful seats,” Ryo exclaimed, settling into his.

“Yeah, you get a pretty good view from up here. You want a drink?”

Ryo nodded. “I’ll have a Manhattan, if that’s okay,” he said with a grin. “Seems appropriate.”

“You got it. Think anyone would look at me funny if I ordered a beer?”

“Of course not. Order whatever you like.”

In the end, Dee found he didn’t need the numbing effects of alcohol to get through the evening. From the first stirring notes of the overture, he found himself captivated, swept away on a tide of emotions, heart racing one moment, and moved almost to tears the next. He’d never know classical music was so powerful. By the time the curtain came down, he felt both exhausted and elated.

“Wow. That was just…” He trailed off, shaking his head.

Beside him, Ryo stirred, as if coming out of a trance. He was smiling, but there were tears sparkling in his eyes. “I know. Thank you,” he said to Dee. “That was wonderful, something I’m never going to forget.”

He squeezed Dee’s hand, which was wrapped tightly around his own, and Dee found himself struggling to remember exactly when that had happened. It must have been after the intermission, when he’d gone to the bar to get a couple bottles of water.

“Not somethin’ I’ll ever forget either,” Dee admitted, prising himself out of his seat, his legs stiff from having sat, barely moving, for the last two hours. “Never knew listenin’ to music could be so tirin’, and I was just sittin’. The orchestra must be exhausted.”

“I imagine they are,” Ryo agreed, getting up and stretching, which was a bit awkward since Dee still had hold of his hand. “But I suppose they’re used to it. You enjoyed it though?”

Dee nodded. “It was incredible, nothin’ like I was expectin’.” Slowly they wended their way out of the seating area and down the stairs, still holding hands. For once, Ryo didn’t seem to care if anyone saw them, not that anyone was paying them any attention, too busy talking among themselves, discussing the performance.

Thankfully, they managed to get out of the concert hall and flag down a passing yellow cab without running into Commissioner Rose. Ryo had a feeling that might have put a dampener on what had otherwise been a perfect evening. No doubt Rose would corner him at some point tomorrow to ask how he’d enjoyed the symphony, but he could think about that later.

“I heard,” Dee said, as he settled beside Ryo in the back of the cab, “that sometimes there’s classical music played in the park. We should get tickets sometime.”

Ryo smiled, sliding closer to his lover, leaning against him, feeling the warmth of Dee’s arm around him.

“Yes, I’d like that.” Something else to look forward to!
