“Where the hell does he think he’s goin’?” Dee spun the steering wheel, tapped the brake pedal, and skidded into the turn in hot pursuit of the getaway car. “He’ll never get past the frickin’ roadworks!”

“Good, maybe that means we’ve got the idiot boxed in. Or not,” Ryo added as the car ahead of them took another sharp turn into a side street that was barely more than an alleyway between two rows of tenements.

“Driver knows his way around, must’ve plotted every potential escape route when he and his buddies were plannin’ the heist.”

“Mm,” Ryo agreed. “But that turn means they’re heading back towards the scene of the crime, just a couple of blocks over. They won’t want to wind up back where they started, and this street dead ends in another three or four blocks, which means they’ll have to turn off soon. If they go left, they risk getting caught in the police cordon, so they’ve gotta go right.”

He got on the radio, directing a couple of patrol cars to block the roads the getaway driver might try to take. Sure enough, a couple of minutes later, the car ahead of them screeched into a right turn, clipping a wall. Dee was only half a block behind, easing off the gas and gliding into the turn, then gunning the engine and closing the gap between the two vehicles.

“Ain’t gonna shake me! Used to think of maybe joinin’ the NASCAR circuit. Reckon I could’a made the grade.”

“Was this before or after you took the police advanced driving course?”

“Hey, I was always this good! All the police trainin’ did was sharpen up my reflexes.”

Grinning, Ryo went back to directing cars to intercept their fugitives. One more turn, and the getaway driver found himself completely boxed in.

“Gotcha now!” Dee grinned savagely. “No place left to go!”

“That’s not strictly true,” Ryo said, smirking. “There’s one place left.”

“Yeah?”

“The last place any of these guys want to go. Jail.”

“Maybe we should get out there and give those bozos the bad news.”
