Sometimes, Buffy wonders if she’s destined to ever find love again. Not something fleeting, affection or convenience, not the sweet innocence of her relationship with Scott, or the grasping after some semblance of normality that had been Riley, but real, true love, the kind she’s only ever known once in her life.
Oh, there was Spike for a while, when she’d felt the need to punish herself for coming back from heaven ‘wrong’. And later, when she’d thought maybe another vampire with a soul would be enough to fill the hole in her heart left behind when Angel broke up with her. She’d been fooling herself though. Spike was sweet, in his way, but there was no more of a future possible with him than there had been with Angel. The only difference was that Spike didn’t risk losing his soul every time they were together.
Maybe that kind of love is something that only happens once in someone’s life, or perhaps that’s just the way it is for Slayers. Whatever. Love seems to be the one thing she’s denied. The permanent kind at least.
There are guys of course. She dates from time to time, sometimes even deludes herself into thinking this might be the one at long last, but it never works out. Every guy she dates, she measures against her past love. They never compare.
She gave her heart away to Angel when she was just a girl, and when he left, he took it with him.
How can she love someone with all her heart when she no longer has one? How can she give herself to someone body and soul when that essential part of herself is still in Angel’s keeping? And yet she’d never ask him to return it, because it’s always been his.
